We were familiar with Elizabethan collars from past use. The first one we got from the vet was fairly transparent. It took our dog awhile to get used to it, then he was fine. But he did crack the collar from bumping into things when excited, so we taped it up. It became so taped up that we could no longer wash it, so we got another one from the vet. However, they had switched to a different type (perhaps sturdier?), and it wasn't transparent. Our dog was extremely distressed to have no peripheral vision, so we went back to the taped up E-collar.
Recently I began looking again and found this one, the only transparent collar I encountered in my internet search. We are very happy with it. We take it off when our dog goes outside (he leaves his leg alone when outside), which reduces the chances of cracking it. In addition, this collar doesn't stick out as far, so our dog has an easier time drinking with it on. We are really glad to have found this item.
I had originally assumed that I would need the medium, as our dog is medium-sized. After reading the measurement info, I ordered the large. I noticed that the measurement information that came with the collar was different than the information given in the listing. I think the listing said that the large would fit up to a 20" neck (or maybe it was 18), but the collar itself says it only fits to 15 3/4". So if your dog's neck is larger than that, I guess you should get the Xlarge.
