(More customer reviews)I have a male and female Miniature Pinscher- the female one I have little to no issues in finding either a collar or harness for her. She fits the proportions that most dog gear companies follow.
HOWEVER, my male dog is much leaner. He's in the absolutely healthy zone with enough fat and a healthy, muscular physique- whereas the female, even with a more tailored diet (than his), and equal amounts of exercise (I run them behind my bike), she's on the verge of being too chubby.
I have been informed that a dog collar ought to be as thick as atleast two vertebrae in their necks, which works out well for the female- I can get her a collar that's about 5/8" thick. Unfortunately for the boy, with an 8" neck, I can only find his collar in the "Toy" size collar with less than a 1/2" thickness.
Today I got this harness after discovering that his previous one did indeed fit his neck, but with a 18.5" chest measurement, he was SOL with the chest piece. Standing still I thought it fit him, but that was obviously not the case when he started walking. He eventually protested and refused to walk in that harness.
SO, when choosing this harness, I did so because it fit well below his chest measurement, and well above it- and by design it seemed less likely to allow him to escape if the neck area was too big.
I would appreciate this (and all dog gear products) more if there were a greater ability to adjust for this sort of need. Especially if they would recognize that just because a measurement might be small, it doesn't always deserve the toy width. He's almost 13 lbs. and the straps that are less than a 1/2" are too thin and wear roughly on his skin- which is nearly exposed through his ultra-short coat.
I'm just sayin'.
Otherwise, the product is excellent; if you just happen to have a pet that fits their preconceived ideals of measurements.
However, as is, the chest strap I can adjust to a decent degree, while the neck strap (tightened all the way) leaves 3" or more of space, and the strap the connects between the two leaves another extra 2" of space, but thankfully the chest strap will not slip off of him even in this position.
