I bought this Pet Locator for my new kitten and because I keep misplacing my keys. I had some concern about the size of the Pet Locator tag being too large or bulky for the kitten because my previous key locator was about the size of a keyfob for the car alarm.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX
Well, I have been thoroughly impressed. The Pet Locator comes with two tiny tags, two splash covers, two PetSplash cases and a locator. I can buy up to two more tags to use with my locator. There are four buttons on it. Each tag can be programmed to one button.
SIZE
I am absolutely amazed at the tiny size of the tags. I do not have to worry about size at all. They are about 1 3/16 inches long, weighing in at 0.005 ounces. With the splash cover, they about 1 5/16 inches long (not counting the loop for the tag) and 0.015 ounces.
The PetSplash case is bigger. The tag and PetSplash case together are 2 3/8 inches long and 0.020 ounces.
The locator itself is about the size of a credit card, just a bit thicker. It comes with a holder and a magnet that I promptly mounted to the refrigerator.
COVERS
The tags can be used without a cover on a keyring loop. There is an option to use them with a splash cover or PetSplash case to prevent damage from incidental water exposure. The case and covers are nice, thick and rubbery, which helps provide protection for the tags. The splash cover has a loop that can be used to dangle the tag from a collar or keychain.
For those who want the tag to remain flush with the collar, the PetSplash case can be used. The tag fits inside, and the collar threads through the case. The setup reminds me of bark collars, but it's good if the tag might dangle in the water when your pet drinks.
There are two issues to consider with the covers:
1) The loop on the splash cover looks like it would break easily when used on a keychain. On a collar, it may not be a problem, because it would not get pulled often.
2) The PetSplash case will not fit a wide collar. In fact, the case will barely fit my kitten's Flower Frenzy Cat Collar, 3/8-Inch Wide, Adjustable 8-12, Pink. If your pet has a wide or thick collar, the case may not fit.
USE
My last key locator worked by activating the tag, making it beep loudly and I had to go searching the house to find the beep. This locator works by flashing lights and sound to point me in the right direction. The Pet Locator tag does beep, but it's a soft beep and difficult to hear.
My house is 3600 sq. ft. I tried placing my keys all over the house and once put it under the covers upstairs at the other end of the house to see if my locator could find it. Yes, it did. When I was downstairs, it beeped in the direction of the keys and directed me upwards. Just remember to point the locator up, down, and around when you're in a two-story house.
I tried the product outdoors. With the Pet Locator in the backyard, I went to the front yard. I received a faint signal. I tried a direct line of sight and measured its limit at 160 feet.
PROS:
+ tags and locator are very small and lightweight
+ locator indicates direction of the signal
+ will work in a large house through walls and floors
+ comes with two splash covers and two PetSplash cases
+ 2 year warranty
CONS:
- tag does not beep loudly (this is a PRO if you are using this on pets with sensitive ears)
- limit of 160 feet direct line of sight (less than the advertised 400 feet)
- loop on splash cover looks like it may not take the stress of being pulled on a keychain
- PetSplash case doesn't fit wide collars
SUMMARY
This is the best key locator system I've ever used. And yes, it's perfect for locating that darned cat.

UPDATE: I've had this for a year and it's still going strong. It's been so useful to me, especially when my cat decides she wants to go sleep in a box or behind the television, or when I'm late for work and can't find my keys.
I needed to change the batteries recently, because the batteries in one of the tags died. I bought 10 390 / 389 Energizer Watch Batteries SR1130SW Cell. They fit and it works. My tags are back in action.
